I've just added the "Keepers," from my recent trip to Paris, to the Photo Gallery page. Click on the button!
Post-processing was with Adobe Lightroom 6. The staircase image (third row, on right) is HDR using nine RAW images.

This is my last day in Paris and, what a day it’s been! Mid 70s and hardly a cloud. « Il fait doux. » A perfect end to a wonderful stay in Paris.
I walked “Illegal Paris” today. I’ve been traveling to Paris for twenty-five years. Twice, I’ve been in a place when I’ve said to myself, “This is a bad idea. I have no business being here. Get out of here. Go find the closest Métro.” Today was one of those times, that is, number two. The area was a bit to the east of Sacré Coeur. I think it was wrong for the Detour app to have a tour that included this area. Quickly, I found a Métro and headed off to a nicer area, Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Louis Vuitton store. Some years ago, when I started going on my annual solo April trips, I thought I would love to live in Paris. I soon realized, though, that everything I really care about is in St. Louis - My wife, kids, dogs, buddies...everything that’s really important. I always want to have a Paris trip on the calendar, but I want it with a round trip ticket. As a matter of fact, Claire and I leave for France in early September. Three nights in Val de Loire and then a week in Paris! The photos that I include in my posts are just quick grabs from my daily shots. When I have some time, I’ll go though all of my photos and add the “Keepers” to my Photo Gallery Page. For those of you that are interested, I’m using a Sony A6300 with a Zeiss 16-70 mm F4 lens. À Septembre. Cordialement, Jeff C. Today was another really interesting Detour walking tour, “Palais-Royal: Art and Life Under Nazi Occupation.”
Dinner was around the corner at a little crêpe restaurant. FYI, dinner was a galette , not a crêpe. Une galette is made with buckwheat flour instead of wheat flour. Hence, it is gluten-free. Today, I went on another Detour iPhone walk - “Saint Germain: The Golden Age of African-American Writers.” It was very interesting and quite well-done. I use walking tours as an opportunity to see the city and take pictures.
Tonight, I had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Le Petit Châtelet (Thanks again to Roger E.!). As always, it was great. Today, I spent a few hours at Centre Pompidou, the modern art museum. Some items were interesting and beautiful while many were just plain weird. Some were unsettling. Afterwards, I walked around Le Marais, of course eating a falafel on the street. The Marais district is so different, being the home of dozens, if not hundreds of small boutique shops. To many, it’s the “Happening place” in Paris. I prefer the 7th Arrondissement.
Since my walking falafel lunch was mid-afternoon, dinner was in the apartment. I could do worse. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to control the order of the displayed images. The plate of food should be the last picture (Dinner!). As you can see, it isn’t. Sorry! À bientôt! Jeff C. Today started out overcast and, eventually, it rained. Planning accordingly, I visited le Musée d’Orsay and L’Orangerie. It’s the greatest collection of Impressionist Art in the world. After the museums, I walked around the Saint-Germain-des Prés area. Then the rain started.
Dinner was at Au Bretzel, one of my favorite restaurants. It’s Alsatian and feels more German than French. The rail workers are taking a break today; i.e., they are working instead of striking. Because of this, I took the train to Versailles. Photographically speaking, it’s a target rich environment.
Today was the essence of “April in Paris.” It was about 70° and partly cloudy. I arrived in Paris yesterday, on a cold and rainy day. Border control, at the airport was a mess, as was the traffic into the city. Currently, the French rail workers are on strike. Typical of the French way of doing things, the strike days are scheduled...two out of every five days. Yesterday was one of those days. Fortunately, they publish a calendar so you can adjust your travels accordingly. The strike affects intercity rail and light rail. It does not affect the Métro, in the city.
Before leaving home I purchased a really interesting iPhone App - Detour. It’s a self-guided walking tour app and it’s really quite impressive. With Bluetooth earbuds and your phone in your pocket, you don’t look like a tourist. Today I did their “Grenelle: The Bread Wars.” Grenelle is a middle-class neighborhood in the 15th Arrondissement. There are many famous bakeries in the area. Unfortunately, not many interesting photo opportunities. Dinner at Bouillon Racine is always a good idea (Some of you might get the paraphrased joke!). La gaufre (waffle) avec crème brûlée. Who knew? À bientôt! Welcome to my travel website. Please take a moment and read the “About Me” page.
