In 1940, “The Last Time I Saw Paris” was published. The song was composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The Battle for France was over and the Germans had occupied Paris. The song begins:
The last time I saw Paris, her heart was warm and gay I heard the laughter of her heart in every street café The last time I saw Paris, her trees were dressed for spring And lovers walked beneath those trees and birds found songs to sing And the last line of the last verse: Till the town went dark Paris went dark again in March 2020. Before COVID-19, I would spend about three weeks in Paris each year. I would go alone, in April and Claire and I would go together, in September or October. I have not seen Paris since September 2019. There were no trips in 2020 or 2021. I arrive in Paris this coming Monday, 4 April. Each day, I'll post a few pictures and a paragraph or two covering what I've done that day.
