about my photography

I remember my first international trips in the early 1990’s.  I would carry ten rolls of 36-exposure 35mm film in a lead pouch.  I don’t think I ever used all of that film. Now, I travel with a few SD cards and, for all practical purposes, I have no limit to the number of pictures I can take.

When shooting film, I’d have them processed and printed.  Sometimes, I’d look at the prints.  Once in a while, I’d sort the prints and put them in photo albums.  The albums were stored somewhere, never to be seen again.  At least they were tangible and far more accessible than my father’s collection of 35mm slides.

Then came the world of digital cameras.  I would shoot lots of pictures.  At home, I'd sort and post process in Lightroom and upload to my Flickr account.  It was almost like the photo albums; i.e., "...stored, never to be seen again."

Now, this website is a living photo album. Periodically, and especially after a trip, I'll add photos to the Album page. I also have a collection of my best photographs,
spanning a period of almost thirty years of travel. These can be viewed on the My Best Photos page.

I have my personal thoughts about photography:
  • #1: Take a lot of pictures and you will have a few good images.
  • #2 - “The Rule of 10%”:  About 10% of your pictures will be “Keepers”; i.e., those that you might want to share.
