The Kitchen project 2025

After living in our home since 1993, we have decided to enlarge our kitchen. Although our existing kitchen was well equipped, it was very small, with major storage issues. The old kitchen was, roughly, 9' x 12' (110 sq. ft.). The new kitchen will be 12' x 21' (251 sq. ft.), plus a 5' x 11.5' pantry. In addition, we will have a new covered patio.

We are fortunate to have a great general contractor, Rick Fitzsimmons. We've known Rick for years; he has done much work for family and close family friends. Rick introduced us to Paul Brenden, an architect (Dado Works). Paul is talented and innovative, creating an excellent plan for our new kitchen and exterior spaces.

During remodeling, our temporary kitchen is our recently-remodeled laundry room. Appliances include a Toshiba microwave (Wirecutter pick as the best microwave for dorms!), a toaster oven, an induction burner plus a Nespresso machine. The refrigerator is in the dining room. Life is good!

Much has happened in November.

NOVEMBER 2, 2025
So much has happened over the last few weeks; the space is starting to look like a room!
Lauren Oster, our designer from Saint Louis Closet Co., came by for final measurements in the pantry area. She followed up by sending 3-D renderings. FYI-We will not be storing sweaters in the pantry!

OCTOBER 16, 2025
We decided to replace the complete roof. Amazingly, the crew from Presidential Construction started a 6:30 AM and finished this complete project in one very long day (6:45 PM).

During the last few weeks, the focus has been on extending the roof over the new patio area.

We are making a lot of progress. Plumbing rough-in is completed and electrical is close. Hopefully HVAC will be soon. Due to the additional square footage, it's necessary to add a mini-split unit. Also, a make-up air unit will be required due to the high CFM of the range hood. Cabinets are on order.

Kelly Uhlig, our incredible designer at RSI Kitchen & Bath, provided these amazing 3D images. The renderings were created by Alison Wankum and Heather Wolken, at RSI.
